Product Reviews With and Without Comparisons
bobfa replied to The Computer Audiophile's topic in General Forum
I work part time at a local audio store. It is almost impossible to compare products across brands at scale even there. Sure we can demo across the brands that the store represents! Many of us are fortunate enough to work in this community and can audition gear that others have in their systems. I have been able to listen to an Antipodes K50 through three generations of upgrades due to the generosity of a good friend. As a community we have shared listening to different DACs and other gear! There is power in the community to extend our experiences. I have been able to experience equipment as part of loaner programs that I would have never been able touch! I have opened my home for fellow audio enthusiasts to listen to what I am working with or bring in something they want to hear on my speakers. Anyone can contribute their experiences! There are no absolutes here. Each situation, implementation, install is different. Owning an AP555 does not make your reviews better. Having a million dollar room to listen in does not help me put speakers in my personal living room. -
I am using a Mercury 3 in my system for a larger project. I have been testing with Ropiee (UPnP) and PiCore Player. The Mercury 3 has a Pi4 as the core computing hardware rather than a CM4. I am booting PCP from a fast 256GB USB, and I have a 4TB SSD for music. I have not perceived any performance issues running LMS and Squeezelite on the new Mercury 3. When running Ropieee, I use my SGC Sonic Transporter I5 for Minimserver or Roon. I have also been testing the new Linux version of Audirvana on the server.

I am surprised you did not bring a NAS with 10TB of Music to choose from.

Does Jplay take advantage of any of the features of the paid version of Minimserver? -

Schiit Urd as a Streaming Hub!
bobfa replied to bobfa's topic in Networking, Networked Audio, and Streaming
I have not tried to send DSD through the Urd over USB. I have the feeling that it will not work. Less that 10% of my music is over 44K.... Hooking a streamer up to the USB of the Urd for Tidal or something, not a problem., for me, for now! -
Schiit Urd as a Streaming Hub!
bobfa replied to bobfa's topic in Networking, Networked Audio, and Streaming
The Urd is almost identical to the Antipodes. When I swap the Shuyanta Theta AES cable between the Urd and the K50, it is hard to tell which one is playing. -
Well if you were taking requests. Consider this my vote.

The Schiit Urd is a very mis-understood device. Schiit calls it: CD TRANSPORT AND UNISON USB™ HUB And the keys that most folks miss is the UNISON USB™ HUB and DDC !! I have an Antipodes K50 on loan for a while and right now I have been A/B ing it with the Schiit Urd. I am using the AES output to my Holo Cyan 2 DAC. So a cable swap is all that is needed to listen to either. The Urd amazes me over and over again. I pick music from one of my CD's that I have also ripped to my music library that is also stored on the K50. The K50 is running Lyrion Music Server and Squeeze player. Now here is where the REAL FUN begins. My iPad Pro is connected to the Urd via USB and the iPad is running iPeng player software. iPeng paid version has the ability to turn the iPad into a Squeeze endpoint. From my iPhone I can now control the music playing through LMS to the Urd to the Cyan 2. Dig it! ScreenRecording_09-01-2024 10-37-18_1.mov

The Taming of the Shrew aka Music Server Costs and SQ
bobfa replied to bobfa's topic in Music Servers
I had this Mac Mini in my system many years ago with the UpTone audio conversion kit and the JS-2 power supply. Over time, I have found that keeping a desktop OS computer in the music system created extra work for me. This new iteration reminded me of that again as I work on software updates and managing server applications. I do not know how often I must be reminded of this. Last evening, I ordered a Small Green Computer, Sonic Transporter i5 Gen 3. Their Sonic Orbitor OS has all the server software I like to switch between when I am testing. RJF @The Computer Audiophile Sometimes I just create work for myself, because it is "fun!?!" Remind me to STOP, and listen to the music. -
Reaching Out for Some AS Community Opinions & Recommendations

I concur with Kal. The LS60 is a great speaker but not competition class! I have an article I am working on that will address part of your series of questions. But lets cover a few other things first. First Tidal and local files are going to do you fine. You have to pick a room where you are going to setup the system. A car is what we call near-field listening. You may want to consider a near field system for you use. A lot of studio recording designs are near field. Once you have the room selected you can listen and measure it to understand the influences presented by that space. Kal also mentioned multi-channel. If you read some of the Immersive Audio articles you should find some inspiration there. My Dolby ATMOS system is 7.1.4. That is 12 channels with seven speakers around the listener in a near field design. There are four speakers in the ceiling and one sub woofer. DSP corrections are applied to the system! You seem to have the tools so just keep going. RJF -
I will try all the ideas this weekend. This has great potential even in home audio. Very Geeky.

The AVIO goes through a POE af (ubiquity) back to the USW16 switch. The Mac does the same. There is some latency control in the DVS software I can set it 4, 6, 10 ms the AVIO is 1ms I have not found any settings yet. Just sharing my learning and frustration.

I just installed the DANTE virtual sound card on my m1 Mac and am feeding a Dante AVIO AES adapter. It mostly works but I get these pauses mid track. It happens with Apple Music and with Audirvana. Anybody have a debugging method that might help. I have not tried contacting anyone else yet. Oh and it does sound good. But the AES is hot...
