alfa
All confused. Just cannot find the best answer . Which Ethernet cable is best got Uptone Ether Regen. CAT 5 , 6 , 7 or 8 ? Shielded or unshielded? Please post from personal experience. Thanks in advance. Link to comment
GryphonGuy
Very subjective topic. I go for shielded wherever possible in my audio signals over ethernet. I settled on Cable Matters Cat 8 for the etherRegen "B" side and single mode fibre on the "A" side. My switch has fibre outlets. Cable Matters Cat 8 cable did take some time to settle in (USA term probably is burn in). Enjoy the journey to your personal cable nirvana. Regards GG alfa 1 Link to comment

musicguy
you opened a can of worms. shielding with ethernet. is good and bad. My best ethernet cable is a Shunyata alpha. worth every penny. You don not want to ground. you're streamer. to you ethernet switch. This is what I have learned. Shunyata cables are cat 6. All the cables I have that are cat 7/8. sound. harsh. and these cables are. AQ and WW. I just use them till my. uptone. ethernet switch then. >. Shunyata Link to comment

The B-side cable can be shield-tied or unshielded, because it is isolated by the moat. A-side ethernet cables are a safe bet if the shield is not tied to ground at both ends. Without doing any research; all the ethernet cables from Audioquest, the Melco C100 and most likely others. I've modified STP and S/FTP cables by removing the gold wrap from one end, leaving only the non-conductive plastic. I've modified CAT8 cables by replacing one metal RJ45 connector with a generic plastic connector. I had one of my Furutech cables modified, upgrading both connectors with Telegartners and lifting the ground on one end. In some cases I use a LAN Isolator to break the ground connection, a strategy also used by SOtM. Sometimes I use a shield-tied cable, with precautions. The ER B-side is one situation where this is acceptable, I use a shield-tied cable between my switch and FMC, but both devices are electrically connected to the same ground point. Also, I only allow one cable with a shield to be connected to each device. Other connected cables are UTP or have the shield ground broken by one of the methods described above, which blocks shield current coming from a third device. I do all this because in my experience STP and S/FTP cables generally sound better than the many UTP cables I've tried. TRHH
Thanks @audiobomber I am currently using Belden Bonded Pair CAT6 (UTP) in my audio setup. But from FMC to DAC/Streamer I use 50 cm Patch cable made from Cat.7 raw cable with Cat.6 connector - S/FTP - PiMF (paired in metal foil) - RJ45 connector on the transmitter side is stripped with scotch tape and with ferrite chokes: Torben RepublicofTexas69 1 Link to comment
