So the prevailing wisdom is to populate all C621e Sage memory slots with 4gb ram (presumably for better SQ). Does that carry over to any motherboard in that it's best to fill all available slots rather than leave any empty? nb. my build doesn't use that particular motherboard and only has four slots, ECC compatible, with just a single non-Xeon CPU socket. Just curious..

The Opto USB is something like £633 it appears ...so somewhat over budget unfortunately. Did the Monoprice have at least some audible benefit? Presumably it did -) I tried it a couple of years ago and found it incompatible with my ADI-2 dac but I read (on AS) that it works with a Matrix SPDIF 2, so might give it another go.

Hi. Just wondering how the fibbrcable stacked up in the end?

Isn't it ATX? Can't find a block diagram unfortunately.

Optical Network Configurations
John769 replied to jabbr's topic in Networking, Networked Audio, and Streaming
Didn't realise that! I used a pair of FTLX1475D3BCV in OM -> Buffulo GS 2024 (both 1gbe devices) back in the summer. Seemed to work ok but soon replaced with Finisar ...1321 and Finisar ...1324, which sounded better to my ears. Could it have caused any physical damage? 🙃 -

If you use a solarflare 8522 in a reasonably powerful server machine with passive cooling, playing native hi-res PCM only, would you likely need to leave the top cover off due to the extra heat produced by the card? Obvioulsy, a very generalised question indeed (influenced by many factors) but just trying to get a sense of how much of a 'heating element' the card could be in practice.-) -
Optical Network Configurations
John769 replied to jabbr's topic in Networking, Networked Audio, and Streaming
@jabbr Do you power your network gear, such as switches, into the same outlets as your servers or have a difference set of outlets somewhere else for them? Like you, I have my endpoint and dac in a separate room from the server. Both use their own isolation transformers. The network gear uses a nearby AC socket to the server, but without going through the server's IT. Just checking I've got things configured well from an AC perspective.👌 -
A novel way to massively improve the SQ of computer audio streaming
John769 replied to austinpop's topic in Music Servers
Do folks using a ER-X SFP connect its single SFP port towards the modem or in the other direction towards the switch etc? Hopefully that's not a silly question..- 18220 replies

Plucked from a current thread on LPS's in the net section. I have no idea if import charges from worldwide places (outside the EU) to UK are more than they were pre 2021. Dreading to find out.. 🤔 https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32966779449.html

At least one person (but possibly a few) posted their recommend settings with the buffalo switches (using the configuration tool), but I cannot find anything after almost an hour searching. If someone could repost, I'd be most grateful.- 18220 replies

A novel way to massively improve the SQ of computer audio streaming
John769 replied to austinpop's topic in Music Servers
thanks for the advice. Only issue is that I only have mobile broadband, meaning it has to be set it up via the switch wizard (unless I'm mistaken but I was advised to do that). Otherwise, I'd be happy to try out the above -) Using mine with a virgin router in modem mode and good quality 12V LPS. You recommend the LPS-1 but not LPS1.2? Can the er-x SFP not be used with those PSU's? Seems most folks prefer it over the non SFP model.- 18220 replies

Quick question regarding adding multiple switches for better SQ: If you set up the ubiquiti er-x as a switch (via that wizard), does it count as an actual switch? So the er-x plus, say, a cisco catalyst would equal 2 switches? 🙃- 18220 replies

I prefer the former, seems to sound clearer with improved sense of stereo, as well as more air and immediacy. That's using a Buffalo GS24 -> OM with a 1 metre yellow cable.😐- 18220 replies

Should be able to compare FTLF1324P2BTL-MC LW against FTLX1471D3BCV over next day or two.- 18220 replies

Too extreme for me too.😊 I would be interested in buying such a molex to dc female cable from Guent, if he was able to make one up. Indeed @Nenon suggested asking Guent a while ago, IIRC. Out of interest, how does the Buffalo GS2016, with stock PSU, compare to a Cisco switch, Alan? (if you've ever compared)- 18220 replies

I understand that. But I'm sure quite a few ER-X SPF users are also galvanically isolating further up the chain with their switches, so don't quite understand such a positive opinion towards the SFP model.- 18220 replies

Edgerouter ER-X SFP Chaps, there a lot of positive opinions about the SFP model. I purchased the non SFP version a few weeks ago but the ER-X SFP is available again in the EU currently. I'm just wondering if there's any difference in SQ between them, bearing in mind that I have two switches ahead of the router (Cisco and Buffalo) where finisar/planet SFPs are used, to an OM at the endpoint. I don't mind at all taking a small hit by swapping over edgerouter models. Any opinions appreciated.- 18220 replies
